History of the Studio:

Evergreen Tang Soo Do started in the fall of 2004 at the West Seattle YMCA.  That school quickly grew to about 50 active students by the fall of 2006 and in December of 2006 we opened a commercial location in West Seattle.  Evergreen TSD operated classes at the West Seattle YMCA in addition to the commercial location until January 2009 when classes at the commercial location became very large requiring 100% of Master Elmore’s attention.  The West Seattle YMCA school remained open and was reorganized into Puget Sound Tang Soo Do headed by Mr. Mark Taylor and Mr. Brandon Uttech.  Evergreen TSD has continued to grow and prosper since it was founded 5 years ago.

History of the Chief Instructor:

Master Elmore started Tang Soo Do in 1988 in Livonia, MI.  His first instructor was Master Michael Romines of the All American Tang Soo Do Association.  Master Elmore earned E Dan under Master Romines and then trained under Master Matt Ochs, joining the World Tang Soo Do Association in 1997 and earning Sam Dan in 1999.  From 1999-2002 Master Elmore was the chief instructor of Grand Tradition Martial Arts in Swartz Creek, MI under Master Ochs.  He then started his own school, Grand Tradition Martial Arts-Plymouth in 2003.  In the spring of 2004, he got a job with Boeing and moved to Seattle, WA.  Grand Tradition Martial Arts-Plymouth was taken over by Mr. Robert Elmore (Master Elmore’s father) and is still operating today.  In the fall of 2004 Master Elmore started Evergreen Tang Soo Do in Seattle.  Master Elmore was promoted to 4th Dan-Master in 2008 and quit his Boeing job in the fall of 2008 becoming a full time studio owner and instructor.

What makes our studio stand out from the rest?

Our family atmosphere and dedication to student’s progress.  Every student at Evergreen Tang Soo Do is a part of our family and we strive to give them the best possible experience through extra classes, private lessons, clinics and seminars, fundraisers, and scholarships, just to name a few.  Our instructors do a great job of making sure every student is progressing physically and mentally through a challenging class curriculum and expecting the best from every student regardless of age, rank, or limitations.  We are always available to our students if they need extra help inside or outside of the dojang.

Student Testimonials

“Many programs offer a physical workout for kids.  Yet few teach the mental skills, like focus and respect, that martial arts do.  Within this smaller group, Evergreen Tang Soo Do (ETSD) stands above the rest.

Before signing up my young son for ETSD classes, I previewed four local martial arts schools.  Without a doubt – largely thanks to the disciplined, yet friendly approach of Master Elmore – ETSD quickly earned my admiration.  For anyone – child or adult – who wants an experience that builds body, mind, and spirit, I highly recommend ETSD.”

We got our son into karate at an early age to help him learn self-control.  We wanted him to be able to learn to control his temper when he got angry and learn more productive ways to deal with disagreements and conflicts.  What we didn't expect was how much our whole family would benefit from his joining Evergreen Tang Soo Do Academy.   Not only is he learning self-control, his focus at school is much improved and he has become more respectful to others. In addition, seeing his growth has inspired his father, mother and sister to join as well.

Nowadays, with so many influences pulling our kids away from us, as parents we are thankful to Master Elmore and Tang Soo Do for providing us with something positive we can do together.  Studying at Evergreen has not only strengthened our minds and bodies, it has strengthened our family.

“Four years ago,  Ben wanted to enroll in karate to learn to kick, punch and scream “HI-YA!” without getting in trouble. My husband and I agreed to it because we wanted help with his “busy” nature. These expectations were met and exceeded by Tang Soo Do and Master Elmore. Every class, Ben experiences the power of trying his best and never giving up.  Though only 8 years old, Ben taps into these powerful lessons to help keep his chin up during some serious struggles with school and friends. Ben walks a little taller wearing his dobok.  Thank you, Master Elmore!

Beth Trigg, parent of Ben Trigg, 8 years old, 3rd gup

“Evergreen Tang Soo Do is a family oriented facility. I love doing classes with my son but I could still opt for adult only classes if I wanted to. Master Elmore is the consummate professional ensuring that the needs of our broad demographic and varying abilities at the dojang is met. His wonderful combination of patience, excellence, and humor make the studio a wonderful place to have fun, get in shape, challenge yourself, and make new friends.  Thanks so much for recognizing what we've known here in Seattle for quite some time--we are very fortunate indeed to have Master Elmore's tutelage.”

Tamela Thomas, 49 years old, Cho Dan Bo, parent of Tug McDonald, 12 years old, Cho Dan

“Evergreen Tang Soo Do has truly been a special place for myself and my two daughters. It provides an opportunity for each us to challenge ourselves individually while doing something healthy and fun as a family. There is no competition or macho attitude. Everyone at the studio is supportive and friendly - constantly encouraging each other. I love that my daughters see me learning new things - and struggling and trying just like them to improve and get it right. I love their smile when a black belt tells them "Good Job!" Even though Master Elmore is clearly in charge of the studio, he makes us feel like we all own it together."

Beth Farmer, 6th gup and parent of Sofie Phillips, 8 years old, 5th gup and Liv Phillips, 4 years old, Tiny Tiger

“Master Elmore and Evergreen Tang Soo Do has provided us with a place where children and adults can come together and learn skills that go far beyond just being physically fit.  While it has been a joy to watch my nearly 7 year old son grow stronger and become more agile, it has been more rewarding to see the life long skills being encouraged and expected on a regular basis; integrity, perseverance, and humility to name a few.  A community of support and respect is what we have found at Evergreen Tang Soo Do.”

Grace Bennett, parent of Henry Bennett-Curtin, 6 years old, 7th gup
